By ‘hang out’ I mean online places too.
A conversation I had a little while ago made me remember how hard it can be to find your kindred when it comes to illustration. And how intimidating it can be when you join a large group with illustrators at so many varying stages of their career.
I’ve been on both sides of the fence when it comes to this. And there are MASSIVE benefits of buddying up with time served, agented and published illustrators. I learned so much by just hanging around the old AOI forum (RIP) and watching conversations unfold. And by posting my work and asking how I could make it better.
But, what I didn’t have was somewhere to talk to people in my position with similar goals. Accountability partners, if you like.
And it got me thinking - what if there was a group for unagented illustrators looking for a break? Either by getting representation or going it alone for their first traditional publishing deal. I mean, that would be very cool, right? Somewhere you can be insecure, not worry so much about showing your work, ask questions that you feel you should already know the answers to. A safe space. Would you folks like a group like that? Let me know and I’ll see what I can do.
In the meantime, I can’t promise to be around 24/7, but I’m always happy to answer any questions on Instagram - you can DM me/comment on any post with q’s and I’ll do my best to answer as honestly as I can. My Instagram username is maxineleemackie
Otherwise, you could check out my Patreon - I’ve been posting resources on there for a while. And yes, those keen eyed amongst you will know that I keep saying I’m letting my Patreon go, but instead, I’ve streamlined it and got rid of the multiple subscription levels and put less pressure on myself. I’m an educator at heart - I love sharing techniques and knowledge and Patreon is perfect for that.
I hope to see you there!
